The fact that there are people in the U.S. that are supporting this is completely unfathomable.

Give The Gift Of Music Promotion This Season With Mi2N Music PR [03 Dec 2009|10:50am]

[musicdish]

Url: http://www.mi2n.com/gift.php3

As part of Mi2N's continuing efforts to make its services available to more artists/musicians, the company will begin offering the purchase of its Mi2N press release distribution services in the form of gift certificates for the upcoming holiday season. The decision to do so was quite logical, partially due to Mi2N's popularity as well as the current economic climate.

If the person you love is a talented musician, then you probably know how hard they work on making their music the best it can be. This holiday season, you can help them to tell the world about it by giving them something they'll thank you for: a seasonal gift certificate for the Mi2N Music PR marketing service.

Mi2N gift certificates will be available for purchase beginning December 1st. Get yours at http://www.Mi2N.com/gift.php3

Book Banning = rage! [01 Dec 2009|11:17am]

krztn
I have been sitting here trying to figure out what to say to this, but the only thing I can come up with is just to link the story:

Books Create Turmoil at High School

Basically, the superintendent of a high school in Kentucky thought that he was going to remove books from an English class because he can't see the merit in teaching them in the classroom. These books are contemporary YA fiction by some brilliant authors, like Laurie Halse Anderson and Chris Crutcher. It's so frustrating because you can totally tell that they did not read any of these books. The one teacher, on the second page of the article, talks about how the reading level is like 5th or 6th grade so they're not appropriate for accelerated reading classes. First of all, after having taken my YA Lit class, those reading levels are shit. They only take into account how many words and syllables are on each page. They don't look at the content of the book. That is the sophistication level. Many of those books, that are being challenged or banned from the classroom, have sophistication levels of much higher than 5th or 6th grade. That is why students are interested in them, not because of the reading level. Besides that, since when is it awful for students to actually want to read something instead of reading Beowulf or Wuthering Heights? I admire the teacher that wanted to mix contemporary stuff with the classics. Also, it's not like these books are awful. All of the books that are being banned from the classroom are books recommended by YALSA - which is part of the ALA, and they're actually recommended for "reluctant readers".

I just don't know. I hate censorship and all this stuff so much. Speaking of censorship, I also love in the article where one parent says "It's not censorship when you make wise decisions about what can be used in the classroom". Oh really? So the definition of censorship changes when it has to do with the classroom? Umm... no. This is censorship, plain and simple. If you're oh-so-involved in what your kids are reading then have them opt out of reading those books, like they were able to do. But that would be way too easy, it's so much better to just ban the books from all the students instead of just a few, because you totally know what my child should read. Ugh.

Also, Laurie Halse Anderson is awesome. She talks about the controversy, as well. If you haven't read anything by her, you should. Read Speak, Twisted or Wintergirls, as well as anything else by her. She's a fantastic writer.
